Judy Bear
Uxbridge artist Judy Bear has captivated audiences with her vibrant landscape paintings that uniquely blend traditional techniques with contemporary perspectives.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
After a few years’ hiatus, Judy will be rejoining the Studio Tour once again as a site artist.
With a Bachelor in Fine Arts from her beloved Alma mater, Queens, a long association with the Uxbridge Celebration of the Arts, the Uxbridge Studio Tour, and many other area arts organizations, she brings a love of art to the mediums that she works in.
One of the very early members on the tour, Judy has worked for over 38 years to support and promote art in the Durham area.
Through courses created in her own studio, as well as offering many courses through the Latcham and Varley Gallery’s, she has shared her passion with many of the children of the Uxbridge area - some of whom have become the artists you will see on your travels on the Uxbridge Studio Tour! Judy has also enjoyed over a decade of teaching art to adults at Durham College.
Summers in the Kawartha’s and now home at Chalk Lake, have, and continue to be, a source of inspiration for her work. You will find glorious sunrises, captured at their birth; waterscapes that seem to undulate as they are viewed; haunting, fog shrouded shore lines that beg a closer look for something hidden among the trees. Occasionally, in a bit of whimsy, a small dog, fishing for crawdads may appear among the other works.
As a departure from the traditional paintings, she has held classes for the craft of Floor Cloths. A treated canvas cloth is painted with whatever pattern, design, or idea, that springs from the imagination of the participants guided by artistic suggestions. Several of these can be seen throughout the studio and yes, they can be walked on. Lessons and site specific commissions are always welcome.
Inspired by travel, Judy’s bold use of colour, recreates the haunting beauty of the Three Sisters as well as other mountains in the Rockies near Canmore. A trip to Chicago was the basis of a collage and the inspiration for other works, such as creating retrospective images.
While completing a Bachelor of Education so that she could teach Art as well as other subjects in the secondary school system, raising two children and maintaining a home, Judy was commissioned to create murals for several of the schools in the Durham region. She has exhibited in many locations and galleries, and continues to welcome visitors to her studio after almost four decades! She looks forward to meeting you in September!
